Japan holds the best longevity in the world for many years. The Southern tip of Okinawa Island in Photo Nov 23, 10 56 26 AMJapan is known for the highest number of centenarians alive in the world. Here is the article from The Blue Zones (9 lessons for living longer from the people who’ve lived the longest). For me, at least, the following facts about U.S. is tough to accept. We spend 2.5 times more than rest of the countries combined on health care. You would think, with spending the enormous amount of money, we would be the healthiest and happiest people in the world, right? What are we missing? What are we doing wrong?


United State Health by the Numbers

There are 207 countries in the world.The U.S. spends more on “health” care than the next 10 biggest spenders “combined” (Japan, France, China, UK, Italy, Canada, Brazil, Spain and Australia), yet we have lower outcomes. American has the shorter lifespan and higher rates of injury and disease than their counterparts in other rich countries.

The 6th leading cause of death is doctor’s mistakes.

A 2nd fattest country in the world (excluding small islands in Pacific). Airline industries in the US spent $5 billion as extra jet fuel cost to transport people who are overweight. (We just lost our #1 status to Mexico in 2015.)
1st in diabetes rates in people 20 years and older. By 2044 the cost of caring for “diabetics” will exceed all the taxes the federal government collects. We consume 150 lb of sugar per year, which exceeds more than another country in the world.

178th in infant mortality rate – of 207 countries!

While the U.S. makes up only 5% of the world’s population, Americans consume over 50% of all the world’s pharmaceuticals.

 

80% of the world’s pain pills (painkiller medication) are consumed by Americans
70% of American stake at least one prescription medication.
45% of the American population has at least one “Chronic” disease.
ADHD diagnoses in U.S. children rose 53% in the past decade.

More than 259 million prescriptions for opioids are written in the U.S. each year— an astounding 1 in 5 patients with a pain-related diagnosis is prescribed opioids. More than 12 million Americans report using prescription painkillers for nonmedical purposes and 2 million Americans over the age of 12 are addicted specifically to opioid painkillers. One in 4 Americans and 1 in 3 millennials reports knowing someone addicted to opioids. (An unexpected reaction to prescribed medications happens. I call “the drug cocktail”. The same goes for over-the-counter drugs. Certain allergy medications and cough syrup, for example, can make you drowsy and the side effects may linger well into the next day.)

There is a crisis in Massachusetts. We have a 900% (this is not typo. nine hundred %!) increase in babies being born addicted to opiates– why? Overprescribing by doctors might be one reason. Their parents are
 on pain meds and give birth to Opiate babies. Newborns treated for withdrawal per 1,000 live hospital births tripled from 2006 to 2012, three time more than the national average. Why Massachusetts? This is the powerhouse of “Big Pharma.”

Possible Causes

About 10,0000 people turn 65 every day in the US (baby boomers are the generation born between 1946 through 1964). Compared to one generation before, baby boomers show 46% more diabetes, 38% more hypertension, and 5.9 fold more hyper-cholesterol. Can you imagine what the numbers on Generation X (born 1965 – 1976: 51 million) and Millennials (born 1977 – 1998: 75 million) will be? We have advanced medical technologies than one generation before; many people have stopped smoking. What’s causing this mess?

Here are my thoughts, in terms of how food may be contributing to these staggering concerns. BPA, PBC, chlorine dioxins, fluoride, bromine, pesticides, lawn chemicals, synthetic fiber carpets, emulsifiers found in soaps and cosmetics, solvents and adhesives.

 

#1 – Fat-Free/Low Fat/No Fat
This diet craze hit in the late 1980s – 1990s. We need to burn fat by eating good fats- like olive oil, coconuts oil, or red palm fruits oil that contain full of essential fatty acids such as Omega 3 and 6 but we were introduced to eat fat-free chocolate cookies, fat-free rice cakes, low-fat yogurt, low-fat macaroni and cheese, 2 % pasteurized milk (pasteurized is another problem). The liver and gallbladder started to get confused because no good fat is coming in. More gallbladder surgeries are one of the end results. When food manufacturers took fat out from their products, they put sugar and/or salt into their products to make their food taste better. Your brain needs fat. Your joints need fat (oil) to function better! By the way, “Olestra”(zero-calorie fat substitute, to make “fat-free” snacks, like fat-free potato chips, are banned in U.K. and Canada. It causes GI problems as well as weight gain. And avoid using Safflower Oil as well as Canola, Soybean oil.

 

#2 – SUGAR: Introduction of HFCS (High Fructose Corn Syrup) 
This goes hand in hand with the fat-free craze. Food companies took good fat out and added HFCS into it so that the taste was sweet and more appealing to the general public and the calorie count was low and no fat. Americans loved fat-free salad dressing and used large portions in salads and dips. We started using low fat maple syrup on Sunday mornings with pancakes and waffles. Eating sugary food is not good but faked sugar and HFCS have a more damaging effect.

 

#3 – Whole Wheat (Gluten) Products + Refined and refortified grains and grain-
based foods

Today’s whole wheat bread is not a made from pure wheat like your grandma used to eat: it is now a crossbred product. Here’s the short article about this. Now, most of the naturally occurring fiber, vitamins, minerals – those good parts we needed to nourish your body – get stripped off. Food industries put “synthetic” versions of vitamins and minerals in them instead. A box of cereal, energy bars, granola – are no longer the REAL FOOD, but all synthetic chemicals. Please read the labels carefully when you are purchasing these products. Please watch this interview with Dr. Perlmutter (neurologist) and Fox News. You will think twice to consume whole wheat again…

 

#4 – Diet Sodas, Sports/Energy drinks
Those empty calories mess up our body’s chemical balance. These “zero” calories drink are the major cause of many unknown inflammatory autoimmune diseases. After your vigorous exercise or prolonged activity, you think it is a good idea to drink electrolyte drink like Gatorade to stay hydrated. Do you know 20 oz Gatorade contains 135 calories of sugar? It is a whopping 9 teaspoons of sugar. Zero-calorie Gatorade contains artificial sweeteners, which is not good for your health either. How about the bottle of cold green tea? You buy a bottle of cold green with rose hips and ginseng because it sounds very healthy, but most of those drinks contain 20 and more grams of sugar and “natural flavors” of green tea, which means artificial chemical coloring dyes. Even the popular vitamin water contains 2.5 servings (check those labels!) that will come up to 33 grams of sugar. Looking for a hydrating beverage after a workout? Try coconut water!

 

#5 –  Artificial flavor and food coloring
The next time you buy blueberry muffins, take a look the small print. Does it say “made with imitation blueberries”, “artificial flavor” or “natural flavor”? In order to make the dark purple the color of blueberry, the artificial flavor red “40”, blue “1”, blue 2” are used. Be sure to read the ingredients: Enriched bleached flour  (all of the natural nutrients are stripped off), palm kernel oil (inexpensive vegetable oil) and all chemicals go with it to make the perfectly beautiful blueberry muffins.  Preservatives are in the food from mashed potatoes flakes (containing BHA), emulsifiers, flavorings, citric acid etc. Do you buy a boxed mac and cheese? Yellow food colorings No.5 and No.6 have been shown to cause hypersensitivity in children. These artificial dyes were developed from coal tar but are now made from petroleum products, and are banned in Norway, Finland, and Australia.

 

#6 – Partially hydrogenated oils (soybean oil (known as BVO – brominated vegetable oil), partially hydrogenated cottonseed oil, hydrogenated palm kernel oil, partially hydrogenated rapeseed oil etc)
Those oils are “unstable” oils which harm your organs on the cellular level. They appear on everywhere from chocolate chips to baked goods to peanuts butter. Most importantly: margarine – it is not food! Eat real butter like Kerry Gold, Coconuts oil, Olive oil, or Palm Fruit Oil (not Palm Oil).

 

#7 – Imitation Eggs (egg beaters, egg whites in a carton, etc.)
People buy these items because the believe eggs raise cholesterol, but that is not true. I have treated many patients who eat organic eggs every day to every other day, and their cholesterol is much lower than patients who eat no eggs. Imitation egg products are very popular for among vegetarians, but they contain natural flavor, vegetable gums, and synthetic vitamins. Please read labels. If you do not have food sensitivities to them, feel free to eat 1-2 real eggs per day.

 

#8 – Lack of regulation on vitamins and supplements.
Yes, we should take multivitamins, vitamin D, fish oil,  B-complex, iron, calcium, etc. But do you know what they are made of? Most of my patients come in with a huge bagful of synthetic vitamins, and they are mostly chemical compounds that can become harmful if you are taking a large amount. For example, B-complex. If you pee neon in 30 minutes later, you are wasting your hard earned money into the toilet every day – it comes in and goes right out. Did you know that your body is not able to digest more than 250 mg of vitamin C at once? Are you taking 1000 mg or more of calcium pills in order to avoid getting osteoporosis? You need to take magnesium with calcium or it won’t be absorbed properly? Instead of going to the bones and tissues, excess calcium will cause calcium to deposit in the body which may attach to the kidneys (in the form of kidney stones), or other tissues (lymphoma and frozen shoulder).

 

#9 – Synthetic Hormones rBGH & rBST to animals. 
This is a huge culprit for poor health in America! These two cancer-causing growth hormones can be found in dairy products, such as yogurt and milk. Check the label for with “rBGH-free” when you buy organic milk and dairy products. American farmers have learned how to make more income by injecting hormone (estrogen) to animals to make them grow faster and fatter. Excessive estrogen (estrogen dominance) is the major cause of the fertility issues I see in my clinic. These hormones are totally banned at milk and dairy farms in the European Union, Australia, Canada, Israel and New Zealand.

#11-GMO (Genetically Modified Organism)/Canola Oil.
Produce with a PLU# sticker starting 8xxxx is telling you that it is genetic material has been altered using genetic engineering techniques. Please visit Healthy Living – Diet Page. The biggest culprit for GMOs is Canola Oil. Do you know Canola stands for “Canadian oil Low Acid”? The Canadian government subsidizes the production of this oil (developed from the rapeseed plant), making is extremely cheap to produce. Rapeseed oil is the source of mustard gas, and on its own, it causes emphysema, respiratory distress, anemia, constipation, irritability, and blindness. But through the beauty of genetic modification, we now sell it as edible oil. 75% of GMO crops are engineered to tolerate herbicides. Glyphosate is Roundup’s active ingredient. EPA estimates that 300 million pounds – nearly 800,000 full bathtubs – are sprayed on crops and lawns in the US per year.

#12 – Soy
Many foods contain soy and corn because these two are very inexpensive to produce. Just like wheat, this 
company produces GMO seeds. If you like to eat Tofu, this company produce Non-GMO Tofu.

 

#13 – Dairy product – think about where the dairy product come from? Do you think you get high-quality milk, butter and cheeses from cows got injected Antibiotics and eat unhealthy grains? Buy organic butter from Iceland or Ireland, eat imported cheese. Milk – I recommend hemp, almond, or coconuts milk instead.

 

#14 – Non-Stick Cookware (PFOA/perfluorooctanoic acid) and Microwave Oven

These “hormone disruptors” are a big cause of poor health and one that can find its way into your world without you knowing. Products you use every day, thinking they don’t have an effect, can have major effects on your health. #18 –  EMF (Electro Magnetic Field) Exposure

#19 –  Xeno Estrogen (Estrogen Dominance Syndrome) –  I have seen this every single day!!! The simple remedy – eat more brussels sprouts, kales, beets and beets green as often as possible. If you can not, there is the capsule and tablet form of supplement available.  You need to cleanse liver and gallbladder by opening up the liver 1 & 2 methylation pathways. Acupuncture, acupressure, supplements, proper diet and lifestyle changes help tremendously.

1 – Triclosan   Popular toothpaste, Date Line video clip, ABC news article; products contain triclosan  household toxins.
 2 Parabens  Used as preservatives, is xenoestrogens (xenohormones). It is also widely used as preservatives in cosmetics, food additives, and prescription drugs. Read labels. Here’s an article about parabens in cosmetics and “Parabens and how to avoid them
3 – 1, 4-Dioxane (polychlorinated biphenyls – PCBs) is commonly used in cosmetics and personal care products which listed ingredients as “Polysorbates, Polyethylene glycol, Polyethylene, Polyoxyethylene”
 4 – BHT (Butylated Hydroxy-Touraine) is often added to foods (cereals, nut mixes, chewing gum, butter spreads etc…) as a preservative. It is used in cosmetics and is also known as a stabilizer in pesticides, gasoline, lubricants, and soaps. Do you eat cereal? Please check the ingredients list. (and if you have a dog, read this!) Both BHT and BPA are banned in parts of the European Union, Japan, and U.K.
5 –  BPA  (Bisphenol A) is endocrine disruptor and Phthalates. “BPA and unexplained infertility” BPA links to obesity and increase the risk of cancer. Here’s the article about “alternative to BPA in the works” & “potentially safer greener alternative to BPA“. This is the most recent BPA contained can food in 2015.
6 – Brominated Flame Retardants  The chemicals sprayed to prevent them from catching fire -furniture, mattresses, electronic equipment
7 – Azodicarbonamide  This chemical can be found in boxed pasta mixes, bread, frozen dinners, packaged baked goods, and flour used as an instant bleaching agent. This is the same chemical used in foam plastics and yoga mats. This chemical is banned in Singapore, Australia, and most European countries.
 8 – Perfluorinated Chemicals   Used to make materials stain and stick resistant. The chemical leaches into our food from non-stick cookware, microwavable popcorn bags, fast food take out containers, fabrics, furniture, household cleaners etc…
9 – Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs)  This is a scary chemical because you cannot see it. This is the gas from building materials, household cleaners, fragranced air fresheners, and scented candles. But certainly, you can avoid purchasing these items, right?
10 – Pesticides  5 billion pounds of pesticides are used every year in the US. They are deep into the soil, to the root of vegetables so that it is not something easily washed off. Not only that, those pesticides eventually pollutes waterways so that our drinking water gets contaminated and fish are not safe to eat any longer.  Have you heard of “Crop Dusting”? The process of spraying crops with powdered insecticides or fungicides from an airplane. Please visit here which produce you should buy ORGANIC.
11 – Carrageenan This is the chemical used in many dairy products (milk cottage cheese, ice-cream, yogurt, sour cream, nutritional shakes), even in infant formulas! Please check this site for more details. Many of “organic” product contain this chemical. Be aware. (Silk, WhiteWave and Horizon Organic are process of removing carrageenan from their product line).
12 – Heavy metals  Leads, aluminum, arsenic, cadmium, lithium, mercury enter our body through foods – drinking water, fish, fruits, vegetables are sprayed with herbicides or grown in contaminated soil (buy organic food!) and also from other sources like antiseptics, dental amalgams (mercury) and second-hand smoking. I use this hair analysis lab to find out a number of heavy metals in the body as well as a mineral imbalance.
