What should I take to protect yourself from COVID-19?

Please do not panic because you can not find vitamin C, Purell at the markets and online stores!!!

It is common sense to cut down sugar, sleep well, avoid crowded places, wash hands, eat whole foods, and go to the food shopping in the early morning or when the market is closing to avoid the crowd. My patients ask which supplements I recommend for a crisis like this. Some of the supplements you probably never heard of. These are my top 10 and more.

 


#1. Zinc Citrate – Zinc enhances various immune cells. 15-30mg per day. Here’s the article about 7 common types of zinc explained. PLEASE do NOT purchase Zinc Oxide. I recommend you to take either or mix the following. Zinc Orotate, zinc chelated, zinc citrate, zinc sulfate, and zinc glycinate. For particularly for COVID-19, I recommend 23mg Zinc Citrate lozenge (1/day) from DaVince Lab. It tastes good and affordable price, and you do not need to swallow the pill every day.

Amla will help the level DOWN. or/and Vitamin C – Take chewable every few hours during the wintertime and the crisis time like now. When you come down with flue, get even every 15 min. You can order online easily or Pure Synergy Vitamin C on Amazon. The powder version comes with Camu Camu, another “greater than C” alternative in this supplement and easy to drink. I like Liposomal Vitamin C as well. It increases bioavailability means vitamin C is not affected by the digestive juices and overcome cellular absorption barriers. #3. Curcumin + Resveratrol + Vitamin D Combo – This combination will bring down NF-kB (complex protein controls the transcription of DNA) which controls the expression of genes encoding the proinflammatory cytokines, free radicals, and antigens. When the virus infection hits the NF-kB, it will amplify to make IL-6, TNF-a, etc. all the inflammatory markers. #5. Fucoidan – the extract from brown seaweed used in many home cooking in Japan. Japan’s population is 1/3 of the U.S. but the Covid-19 victim is 1/100 even they did not do the complete lockdown as we did in the U.S. I knew there is something Japanese are eating every day. The extract “Fucoidan” derived from seaweed was the answer. It covers the ACE2 Receptor so that the spike of COVID-19 can not get into our cell. Just like you can not open the door because the key does not work with a door lock latch. Fucoidan is jamming the latch. I do not think 99.9% of people in the U.S. are not able to eat seaweed everyday like most of Japanese do. #6. Licorice along with Astragalus, Schisandra commonly used in the TCM (Tradicional Chinese Medicine) to boost immunity and give back energy. Glycyrrhizin, the active constituent of licorice, can BIND the ACE2 receptor means it prevents the virus from getting into the cells.

#8. Selenium – Selenium deficiency is very common. It is one of the trace minerals like copper and zinc. Selenium deficiency increase the rate the viruses can mutate. Use Selenomethionine 200mcg per day. Pure Encapsulation makes the one with the tiny capsule.

#9. NAC (N-Acetyl-Cysteine) – this is one of the best nutrients we need to use for detoxifying liver means combat influenza infection. It thins mucus and helps to stop coughing. This is also used for bronchitis both acute and chronic. 300 mg with each meal. If you are just starting NAC for prevention, take 300mg per day with food.

#10. Quercetin – Quercetin is often used for anti-inflammatory supplements. It works great for seasonal allergy as well. #12. Olive Leaf / Elderberry / Oregano Oil – The olive leaf is a strong antiviral plant 1 capsule / 1 dropper full per day. Elderberry comes with capsules and syrups. It is nice and sweet. You may take once a day. Oregano Oil has another strong antiviral, antibacterial, and antiparasitics properties. To avoid having burp after taking oregano oil capsules, I recommend this brand. Mushrooms defenders like Turkey Tail, Reishi, Maitake, Shitake, and Chaga as the ingredients. 1-2 capsules per day for prevention purposes. Metagenics has Nazanol and Candibactin BR contains the botanicals listed here and pretty powerful.

Echinacea, it is great for most people but if you happen to have Hashimoto’s disease (Hypothyroidism with TPO antibodies above 32), you better stay away from taking it because people with Hashimoto’s autoimmune disease are TH1 Dominant (immune system) and tends to overreact with this plants.

Soap:

Buy this traveling size soap and get the habit of washing your hands when you are not at home and get this one for at-home use. You can give a bath for a pet using this soap. Why do I recommend this soap but antibacterial soaps you can find everywhere? Antibacterial soap increases the various Staphcoccus bacterias in the gut. I have seen a lot in my patients and it is not a good thing…


The best disinfectant for the countertop: The best of the best is homemade cleaner by mixing water and (any) vinegar by 2:1 ratio. You may add an essential oil like lemon to enhance the smell. It kills bacterias and viruses landed on the countertop.


Vitamin D Level: If you are taking 400IU living in the New England area is not enough at all. When your doctor tells you it is not necessary to test vitamin D or not necessary to take vitamin D (during the wintertime), think about switching your PCP. Seriously! Below 32 ng/ml for serum 25 OH Vitamin D level is low and not acceptable. The Functional Range (optimal range) is 55-75 ng/ml (especially for women trying to get pregnant). If you have VDR genetic mutation SNPs, your cells are not able to absorb vitamin D easily even though you are taking a higher dosage. I found VDR (+/+) very often. Remember the fact vitamin D is escorted into the cell by another fat-soluble vitamin called vitamin K, another fat-soluble vitamin. That means it will be wise to take vitamin D comes with vitamin K with a meal once a day. Bring your stress level at a minimum because ongoing stress lowers the immune system. Your immune system is constantly in the attack mode if your stress is constantly high.


Extra Sleep and Fun: Many of you do not need to commute to the office. Get some extra sleep and watch goofy Youtube videos or movies (comedy/romance) other than watching CNN all the time.
